How do I make a picture background transparent?

Which file format keeps transparency?

PNG keeps transparency, and this tool saves a PNG whenever the background is transparent. JPG cannot store transparency, so choosing a color or blurred background saves a JPG instead.

Why are there faint ghost areas in the preview?

That is an optional guide that shows the removed parts of the photo at low opacity so you can see what the brush would restore. Turn off Show removed areas faintly to see the exact result; it is never saved in the download.
