Square posts are 1080x1080 pixels, portrait posts 1080x1350 (4:5) and landscape posts 1080x566. Portrait takes the most room in the feed, so it often performs best.
Stories and Reels use a 9:16 frame of 1080x1920 pixels. Pick the Instagram Story preset and the image is resized and cropped to fit that frame.
Instagram recompresses uploads, but images that are already exactly 1080 pixels wide are not scaled again, so they usually look sharper than oversized uploads.
Use the Crop to fill option. The photo is scaled until it covers the whole 1080x1080 frame and the overflow is cropped evenly from the sides. To keep the whole picture, crop it first with the crop tool.
